About the Department

The UC Advanced Research Computing (ARC) center offers a readily accessible hybrid CPU/GPU computing cluster, supporting the next generation of computational and data science researchers. With our resources, support, and training, UC researchers advance theoretical knowledge and accelerate time to discovery, generating leading edge impactful research suitable for innovation and commercialization in line with UC's Next Lives Here strategic direction and Digital Futures.  

Job Overview

We are seeking an Interdisciplinary Research Machine Learning Facilitator to join us in our mission and goal to provide a comprehensive centralized computational and data management ecosystem for researchers.  This involves working with a wide range of open-source software, containers, interactive computing environments, data visualization, modeling and simulation, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. This position will need someone who has technical expertise either using or supporting advanced research computing, including machine learning, great customer service skills, is a team player, and is self-motivated. 

Essential Functions

  • Assist researchers in leveraging computational resources, storage, data transfer tools, and networks to accelerate their research efforts. Work directly with researchers to understand aspects of their research workflows that rely on, or could be aided by, current computational methodologies.   
  • Identify researcher needs for training and learning materials in a variety of computational capabilities. Identify and recruit additional users of UC’s evolving facilitation and computing resources. Contribute to the development and implementation of training programs, including instructional contributions to workshops and campus events. Develop user community by creating user forums, student groups and other regularly scheduled opportunities. Provide ongoing support for users.
  • Prototype and communicate specific solutions for implementing and optimizing a user's work, prioritizing the ability of the user to implement these for themselves.
  • Develop a network of internal and external partners to facilitate progress for research projects, including the identification of potential intra- and inter-campus collaborations. Participate in the collection and review of user and system metrics to guide the facilitation of users, assessment and critical analysis of research computing performance and inform improvements to Research Computing and Data services and technologies.
  • Contribute intellectually to the development of novel initiatives, technologies and service solutions that address the evolving needs of the campus and national research community. Contribute to documentation capturing key use cases, computing strategies and solutions for users to learn from.  
  • Support researchers focused on utilizing machine learning to solve research problems and developing machine learning-driven tools. Work with users to understand and identify hardware and software necessary to realize their workflows. Prototype and communicate specific solutions for implementing and optimizing a user's work, prioritizing the ability of the user to implement these for themselves.

Required Education

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Six (6) years of relevant work experience and/or other specialized training can be used in lieu of education requirement.

Required Experience

  • Two (2) years of research experience in a compute-intensive area, or in computing facilitation. 
  • Two (2) years of experience in at least one research domain, such as life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, or the humanities.
  • Basic skills with one or more scripting languages like Unix shell, Python or R.
