This starting salary is based on education and experience.  Starting salary for promotional candidates will follow contractual requirements.

  • Additional shift differential $3.00/hour while working 2nd shift hours
  • Additional shift differential $4.50/hour while working 3rd shift hours
  • Additional weekend differential $2.10/hour while working weekend hours 

In addition, candidates may qualify for $200/month nursing-student-loan reimbursement.

Job duties:

This position is professional services work of a supervisory nature in directing nursing services or assisting the nursing director at a state institution.  Responsibilities include planning a nursing program of some scope; organizing, supervising, training and coordinating the work of a large group of professional and paraprofessional personnel who provide necessary and direct care services; and inspecting and evaluating nursing services. This position is an adjunct member of administration, and carry out administrative and supervisory duties after-hours, oversee employees and overall patient care.

A Typical Day Includes:

  • Plans, directs, coordinates, and supervises the work of a large staff of professional and paraprofessional nursing personnel at a state hospital in order to ensure nursing program services are provided.
  • Reviews day and night reports from wards, units, and teams in order to consolidate such reports for use by the medical staff.
  • Inspects wards, units, and teams regularly and directs and monitors personnel in the care and treatment of patients in order to ensure work is performed according to agency policy and procedures.
  • Notifies families and clergymen of critically ill patients in order to make necessary preliminary arrangements in case of death.
  • Confers with other members of the medical staff in order to make recommendations on improvement of nursing standards and nursing program effectiveness.
  • Conducts individual counseling and/or group therapy with patient and/or family in order to develop understanding of problems and methods for corrective treatment.
  • Provides direct and/or indirect care to the acutely ill at a state hospital in order to ensure proper treatment is given.
  • Teaches basic psychiatric concepts, treatment modalities, and selected advanced general nursing procedures in order to update staff skills.
  • Organizes, implements, and evaluates quality assurance plan for medical-psychiatric patient care in order to ensure proper care is provided.
  • Makes rounds with a physician in order to visit patients and administer to their needs.
  • Conducts physical examinations of patients possibly requiring medical care in order to make referrals when necessary.
  • Implements and complies with human resource laws, policies, procedures and practices such as: AA/EEO, recruitment, employment, position classification, performance appraisals, training, discipline, contract administration, human resource components of security protocols of agency information security and confidentiality policies, and employee safety. 

Minimum Qualifications:

Registration by the Maine State Board of Nurses and two (2) years nursing experience at a supervisory level.  Preference will be given to those with experience in NOD and unit supervision.
