Project description

The floating wind market is now still in an early stage with some prototype floating turbine generators being installed. According to market forecasts, the number of floaters, will increase significantly by the end of this decade, including mooring and installation. Royal IHC developed the patented subsea tension tool as an independent intervention tool for tensioning chain, but a simplified version is preferred for the wind industry.

The IHC SAS-Hytop engineering department is responsible for the delivery of the engineering design package for construction and delivery of offshore equipment. Next to delivery of the engineering design packages to the workshop, engineers also communicate with the workshop, class bureaus and customer on a daily basis.

The Challenge

Within this graduation Project, you are responsible for determination of the scope of work and further detailing a part of the concept version of the new simplified the Subsea Tension Tool, as a basis for further development of a tool. After finishing the concept, our sales department can offer our customers a cost-effective method for tensioning mooring chains after installation, without adding additional weight to the mooring line. Your assignment will set the basis for this development.

You will use current design, feedback from SAS-Hytop and clients, as well as regulations to create the tool specification and a scope of work for the concept design phase. The goal after completion of the concept design is to inform clients and determine an engineering scope for the next stage (basic design). Your task is to clearly define the activities needed for the concept design and perform a relevant part of it. To achieve this, you will be involved in a wide range of tasks and have the following responsibilities:

Setting up the requirements for the tool, based on market opportunities, restrictions and class rules;

Function analysis of the current concept to determine the missing functionality and formulate questions to be answered to finish engineering.

Overview of possible solutions for the most critical missing functionality or questions to be answered, optionally backed up by a brainstorm;

Liaising with SAS-Hytop engineers on their day to day design and their approach to these areas;

Liaising with other departments within SAS-Hytop (sales, management) to collect information needed.

Recording the selected updates in the concept design in sufficient detail in sketches or drawings, calculations and the final report as a basis for further development of the design;

Optional: Updating a research- and patent study into tensioning methods to the current state of affairs;

In short, you are expected make an important contribution to the development of a disruptive and cost effective method for chain tensioning on floating wind turbine platforms.

This method can change the market and help bring down the cost of floating wind to an acceptable level. It will contribute to the feasibility of floating wind and help to enable a brighter future for the energy transition.

Your Profile

To be able to discuss and inform the organization and colleagues in the developments and initiatives in the field of chain mooring, floating wind and the Royal IHC way of working, you must be an articulate, confident and self-driven individual. You will be able to take the initiative. To be eligible for this position, you must have:

  • A vocational education (HBO or WO);
  • A study focused on creative machinery design or mechanical engineering;
  • Knowledge and/or interest in offshore technology and preferably of mooring and/or (floating) wind turbines;
  • Experience with 2D and 3D modelling (desirable);
  • A good command of the English language, both verbally and written;
  • The ability of using feedback to improve the quality of your work;
  • The ability to work independently and to be self-critical.
