Job Description Summary:

As a Senior Business Data Analyst, you will serve as a senior analytics partner and business intelligence subject matter expert, helping offices across the institution transform complex data into meaningful, actionable insights by conducting analysis, visualizing data, providing context, and helping stakeholders understand trends, performance, risks, and opportunities. In this role, you will work closely with leadership and staff to define business questions, clarify analytical needs, develop trusted data assets, and create dashboards and reporting that support strategic decision-making. You will play a key role in expanding analytics support beyond the Office of the Chief Financial Officer to institutional partners such as the Office of Strategy and Engagement, the Office of Peer Review, and the National Research Council Executive Office.

Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

Duties may be performed solely for a specific business or functional area or a combination of areas. 

Institutional Analytics and Stakeholder Partnership: Partners with leadership and staff across institutional units to understand business needs, define analytical questions, clarify reporting goals, identify relevant metrics, assess available data, and determine the most effective analytical approach. Conducts analysis to identify trends, patterns, risks, opportunities, and key findings, and translates those findings into clear insights that support planning, operational improvement, performance tracking, and senior leadership decision-making.

Dashboard Development and Business Intelligence: Designs, builds, tests, publishes, and maintains dashboards and reporting products in Tableau and related business intelligence platforms. Creates dashboards that are accurate, accessible, visually clear, and aligned with stakeholder needs. Manages the release of assigned dashboards, including requirements gathering, stakeholder review, testing, documentation, publication, and post-release support.

Analytics Infrastructure: Develops and maintains a unified analytics foundation for Tableau by creating consistent structures, reusable data assets, transformation logic, and common business rules that allow data from multiple sources to be used reliably across Business Data Analytics products. Ensures that analytical workflows are sustainable, scalable, well-documented, structured in a way that supports consistent analysis, reduces duplication, and strengthens confidence in reported results and designed to support both current reporting needs and future growth.

Data Assets: Designs, builds, and maintains data assets in the Tableau data ecosystem for senior leadership decision support by ensuring the overall accuracy, completeness, and reliability of datasets and data models.

Data Quality: Supports strong data quality practices within Business Data Analytics by helping ensure that key metrics, definitions, assumptions, and business rules are applied consistently across analytics products. Identifies and communicates data quality issues, source system limitations, and interpretation considerations that may affect reporting or decision-making. Contributes to clear, transparent use of data with documentation.

Consultation: Provides expert guidance to stakeholders on data interpretation, reporting approaches and analytical best practices. Supports technical components of dashboard development such as consulting on coding buildout.                                                                                               

Staff Management: May train and coach analytical staff.  If supervising staff, provides leadership and mentors employees. Trains and develops employees to successfully perform current responsibilities and encourages development of staff for future roles.  Forms effective teams and cultivates a work environment that fosters teamwork. Interprets and ensures consistent application of organizational policies.  Initiates personnel actions, including performance and compensation reviews and disciplinary actions.  Mentors, collaborates with, and advises data analytics team members.
