Position Overview
Butler University’s Information Technology department is currently seeking a passionate and skilled Information Security Engineer who is eager to join a team that values education, collaboration, innovation, and fun. Reporting to the Chief Information Security Officer, the Information Security Engineer role has the primary responsibility of safeguarding Butler University's computing network, storage systems and applications. The Engineer plans, implements and monitors security measures to protect Butler’s technology infrastructure (with a primary focus on network infrastructure) from cyber-related risks including, but not limited to, malware, ransomware, hacking, intrusion, infiltration, natural disasters and other external/internal threats. The Engineer collaborates with the System Architecture team to embed best practice security controls into network and system design.
The Engineer also works with applications teams to ensure proper security is being implemented to protect critical business applications. This individual will work together with team members to create project plans, timelines, and deliverables, and will guide Operations personnel. The Engineer will also work with hardware vendors, provide detailed written documentation of support protocols for supported systems, and provide occasional end-user training. The Engineer may also occasionally provide consultative services or participate in other external ventures as requested as part of Butler-owned value-added reseller AvantBlue.

Responsibilities
- Principal technical subject matter expert for implementing security controls in consultation with the Infrastructure and Applications teams
- Configuring, implementing, and maintaining intrusion detection systems, threat detection systems, security infrastructure devices, firewalls, virtual private networks, web protocols, and email security.
- Investigating security incidents and recommend remediation paths
- Working with Butler’s Security Advisory Team and Security Operations Center to lead projects that increase the overall security posture of the University
- Planning, engineering, and monitoring the security arrangements for the protection of the network and business application systems
- Determining, recommending, and implementing the latest technologies and processes that will improve the overall security profile of Butler
- Using industry-standard analysis criteria (and partnering with third-party vendors) to test the security level of the university, and weaknesses in software and hardware.
- Developing tracking documents to note system vulnerabilities, reporting the security analysis and monitoring findings.
- Informing IT executive management of security incidents as soon as possible.
- Working with the CISO and Security Advisory Team to define and maintain security policies.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in IT, Business, Leadership, Operations or related field required
- 5+ years of network security experience, including principal accountability for design and implementation of wired and wireless networks, firewalls, VPN, and web security
- 5+ years of IT cybersecurity, infrastructure, application security or related experience
- Proven experience participating in large IT cybersecurity projects involving cross-functional teams and business units
- The ability to visualize, articulate, conceptualize or solve both complex and noncomplex problems
- Excellent reading, writing, speaking and listening skills
- Ability to balance cybersecurity considerations with real-world business processes
- Broad knowledge of IT systems and business analyst processes
- Ability and desire to thrive in a team environment
Preferred Qualifications
- Master's degree in Computer Science, Computer Technology, Cybersec
