About the role

Job Description

At General Motors, our product teams are redefining mobility. Through a human-centered design process, we create vehicles and experiences that are designed not just to be seen, but to be felt. We’re turning today’s impossible into tomorrow’s standard —from breakthrough hardware and battery systems to intuitive design, intelligent software, and next-generation safety and entertainment features.

Every day, our products move millions of people as we aim to make driving safer, smarter, and more connected, shaping the future of transportation on a global scale.

Hybrid – This role requires the employee to be onsite at least three days a week. The primary work location may be at the General Motors Global Technical Center in Warren, MI.

Role Overview

As a Senior Safety Process Engineer – AMR Execution within the Autonomous Robotics Center (ARC), you will play a key role in building and executing safety engineering processes for our autonomous mobile robots (AMRs) portfolio. You will help define and translate safety objectives into design requirements, certification plans, and validation strategies across hardware and software systems. You will also help drive program safety execution across the GM-specific safety process landscape, with strong focus on achieving internal GM safety milestones.

This role is ideal for an engineer who brings strong technical depth in functional safety, structured documentation, and cross-functional execution. You will work closely with software, controls, electrical, product, and program teams, as well as external suppliers and certification partners, to ensure our products meet demanding safety and regulatory expectations while supporting performance, scalability, and operational flexibility in real-world environments.

What You’ll Do

  • Build and execute safety design requirements across autonomous mobile robotics programs in partnership with cross-functional engineering teams
  • Develop, maintain, and organize core required safety deliverables including safety requirements specifications, hazard analyses, risk assessments, reliability diagrams, performance level calculations, and validation documentation
  • Own product certification efforts from planning through execution, including preparation of technical documentation, evidence packages, and coordination with external certification partners
  • Collaborate with hardware and software teams to integrate safety-by-design principles across sensors, controllers, drives, navigation systems, and related electrical and software architectures
  • Contribute to verification and validation strategies that demonstrate safety requirements are properly implemented and that systems achieve targeted safety performance levels
  • Review technical designs, wiring diagrams, safety functions, and validation results to identify gaps, risks, and opportunities for improvement
  • Partner with engineering, product management, program management, and suppliers to resolve safety issues, and align on compliance and documentation expectations
  • Plan and execute safety process activities required to move autonomous mobile robotics programs through g-Risk and green tag readiness
  • Track open safety issues, documentation gaps, and validation needs, and drive cross-functional teams to closure through structured follow-up and clear accountability
  • Help strengthen safety culture across the development lifecycle by promoting documentation rigor, traceability, validation discipline, and proactive risk identification
  • Clearly communicate safety requirements, certification needs, technical risks, and recommended actions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Bachelor’s degree in Systems Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field
  • Professional experience in functional safety, system safety, machine safety, safety-rated circuit design, or a closely related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience supporting or coordinating safety activities for complex electromechanical systems, industrial automation systems, robotics platforms, or similar products
  • Working knowledge of relevant safety and certification standards such as ISO 13849, IEC 61508, ISO 12100, ISO 3691-4, ANSI B56.5, UL, or related frameworks
