Under the general supervision of the Transportation Services Assistant Manager, the dispatcher is responsible for assigning and coordinating work shifts for bus drivers. The position is responsible for responding to all emergency situations that arise on the buses, assisting with accidents, ensuring that drivers are on time for their shifts, assigning buses and routes for the day, and covering any open shifts. Additionally this position is responsible for answering the telephone, using the dispatch radio system, and assisting any customers that come into the UTS office. Dispatchers may also be required to start buses (including checking vehicle fluids), drive as needed and assist with any other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities include the oversite of each of University Transportation Services, including documents, paperwork, or other resources. Lead and direct staff, make sure staff come in on time and in their vehicles on time to complete their inspections and schedule runs throughout their shift and assist them in doing their job properly. Be able to multitask, think quickly, and make sound decisions.

Dispatcher, Sundays - Tuesdays, 2:30pm - 1:00am and Driver, Wednesdays, 2:30pm - 1:00am, subject to change depending on department needs.

Job Duties:

  • Ensure drivers show up to work on time, and properly attired to meet the UTS dress code.

  • Assign drivers their bus for the day, notify them of their scheduled routes, ensure that buses go out on time.

  • Set up the daily route schedule on the computer. Maintain the daily route schedule including maintenance issues, fueling information, Access runs, Medi-Cat, etc.

  • Ensure all driver breaks are accounted for and covered.

  • Review route runs and update any other important information— submit to management at the end of the day.

  • Assign work for the stand-by and Access drivers as needed.

  • Operate the two-way radio communications system to dispatch drivers on their routes, respond to emergency situations involving buses/drivers, and any other necessary communication.

  • Ensure route buses are running on time and campus connector routes stay properly spaced out.

  • Assist drivers with vehicle breakdowns by determining the nature of the breakdown, and then conferring with management and the maintenance garage regarding best solution.

  • Work with the garage to coordinate vehicles needing maintenance, pulling them out of service as needed.

  • Notify Manager & Assistant Manager of any concerns related to reasonable suspicion drug testing to comply with DOT and FTA drug & alcohol regulations and help maintain driver/passenger safety.

  • Send out iContact/Facebook/Twitter/social media notifications as needed for service changes or buses running late.

  • Assist with creating notices for buses, shelters, office, and any other required locations to announce service changes.

  • Answer the telephone and respond to customer questions, comments, and concerns.

  • Assist Access passengers with the schedule changes as needed.

  • Work with Student Accessibility Services, UNH Health & Wellness, and the Civil Rights & Equity Office (CREO) for new Access passengers.

  • Set up new passenger ride schedules and communicate the schedule to the passenger.

  • Track passenger no-shows and notify the Assistant Manager of any concerns.

  • Keep the scheduled Access driver up to date of any changes in service.

  • Reach out to all drivers (phone/email/text) to cover any uncovered shifts.,

  • Ensure that all vehicles are properly fueled, cleaned, sanitized, and secured at the end of the day.

  • Check the oil for the CNG compressors and fill weekly or as needed.

  • Maintain maintenance records the CNG station as needed.

  • Coordinate CNG fuel station repairs as needed with the company doing the maintenance/repairs.
