Tidewater Community College has served South Hampton Roads – both students and employers – for 50 years. It has grown from 1 campus into a regional educational and economic force. TCC is the largest provider of higher education and workforce services in Hampton Roads, enrolling nearly 25,000 students in 2024-25. Founded in 1968 as a part of the Virginia Community College System, Tidewater Community College (TCC) services South Hampton Roads with 4 campuses in Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Virginia Beach, 7 regional centers and 2 important cultural institutions. The college had 3,399 graduates in 2024-2025, 40 percent of whom pursued degrees that would let them transfer to 4-year institutions. Of South Hampton Roads residents enrolled in higher education 33% enrolled at TCC. TCC’s institutional accreditation is affirmed through 2027 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges.

This position will provide leadership, oversight, and strategic direction for Tidewater Community College’s fitness, wellness, and recreation initiatives, while being based at the Norfolk Campus. Responsible for the development, implementation, coordination, and assessment of comprehensive college-wide fitness and wellness programs designed to support student success, employee well-being, and campus engagement across all campuses. Oversees the operation of the Norfolk Campus fitness facility and provides guidance, support, and coordination for fitness and wellness activities throughout the College. Works in coordination with the Associate Director of the Chesapeake Student Center, Fitness, Wellness, and Ready Education to develop, implement, assess, and enhance college-wide fitness, wellness, and recreation initiatives. Evaluates program effectiveness, develops and refines departmental procedures, supervises assigned staff, and advances a vision for an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable wellness culture that promotes the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of the entire college community.

Special Assignments

May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

KSA's/Required Qualifications
  • Knowledge of fitness, wellness, recreation, and health promotion principles and best practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, assess, and continuously improve comprehensive fitness and wellness programs
  • Knowledge of program planning, event coordination, and student engagement strategies.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and utilize data to evaluate program effectiveness and support continuous improvement efforts.
  • Knowledge of facility operations, risk management, safety procedures, and fitness equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to develop, implement, and monitor policies, procedures, and safety standards related to fitness and wellness operations.
  • Knowledge of procurement processes, inventory management, vendor relations, and contract administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise, train, motivate, and evaluate staff and student employees.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, priorities, and deadlines while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to market programs and increase participation through effective outreach, communication, and engagement strategies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, community partners, and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills and the ability to respond effectively to questions, concerns, and feedback.
  • Strong oral, written, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
