About the role

Job Description Summary

Organization's Summary Statement:

The Senior Academic Advisor will serve as an advisor to current and prospective Neuroscience undergraduate students. As part of the advising team, they will use a holistic advising approach to support and monitor student’s successful completion of degree requirements. Duties include but are not limited to: maintaining advising records, academic audits, and degree clearance. The Senior Academic Advisor is also expected to stay current with academic policies and experiential learning opportunities, provide supportive guidance for graduate study and career planning, and referrals to a wide range of campus services. The Senior Academic Advisor will be the program point person for student recruitment events (including admitted open house events), new student orientation, and prospective advising. They will also be involved in LEP application review, community building events, teach CMNS100: Introduction to the University, and will manage some of the program’s website and social media presence.


Physical Demands: The physical requirements of the Senior Academic Advisor position are consistent with those of a typical office-based professional role in a higher education setting:
Sedentary Work: This role involves prolonged periods of sitting while performing advising sessions, computer-based tasks, and administrative duties. Repetitive Tasks: Frequent use of office equipment, including a computer keyboard, mouse, and telephone, requiring repetitive hand and wrist movements. Mobility: Occasional walking is required to attend meetings, events, and collaborate with campus partners across various locations on campus. Lifting: Infrequent need to lift or carry materials such as files, office supplies, or event materials weighing up to 20–25 pounds.



Licenses/ Certifications: n/a

Preferences:
Experience as an undergraduate academic advisor working with diverse populations.
Experience as an undergraduate academic advisor working with a STEM student population.
Experience as an undergraduate academic advisor working at a 4-year university.
A master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Counseling, Biology, Neuroscience, Psychology, or a related field.
Special consideration will be given to candidates who have experience with the academic requirements and administrative policies of the University of Maryland, and campus technologies (e.g., AOW, U. Achieve, SIS, TerpEngage or Salesforce, Canvas, Qualtrics).
Teaching experience
Basic web design experience encouraged.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Four (4) years of experience providing counseling or advising services.

Other: Additional work experience as defined above may be substituted on a year for year basis for up to four (4) years of the required education. Knowledge of best practices in organization and administration.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Knowledge of public relations and marketing techniques.
Skill in oral and written communication.
Skill in the use of Microsoft Office products.
Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.
Ability to multitask while demonstrating a commitment to customer service and sensitivity to a culturally and ethnically diverse community.
