Staff Mechanical Engineer, Precision Motion Control
10x GenomicsAbout the role
About The Role
We are seeking an expert and thought leader to join our Hardware Engineering group as a Staff Mechanical Engineer. This role is focused on the mastery of precision motion control, requiring deep, hands-on expertise in control systems theory and servo tuning to achieve nano-scale resolution for our next-generation instruments.
You will take on full leadership of critical projects, guiding the development of cutting-edge mechanical technologies. You will have significant influence on the strategy and execution of complex mechatronic systems, from architecture to the finest details of servo loop optimization. As a key leader, you will not only drive the design of novel systems but also play a central role in mentoring and developing our engineering team in the art and science of precision motion.
What You Will Be Doing
- Strategic & Technical Leadership: Architect and lead the end-to-end design of novel, large-scale mechatronic systems, including the nano-precision motion and robotics subsystems that are central to our instruments.
- Advanced Motion Control & Tuning: Lead the hands-on characterization and tuning of complex motion systems. This includes optimizing multi-axis gantry systems and linear stages by expertly tuning PID, servo, and current loops to achieve demanding performance goals.
- System Analysis & Optimization: Apply control systems theory to diagnose and solve complex motion challenges. You will be responsible for analyzing system performance and stability using tools like Bode plots, ensuring appropriate phase and gain margins for robust, high-speed, and nano-scale resolution moves.
- Execution & Integration: Lead cross-functional teams (Electrical, Software, Biology, NPI) to ensure the seamless integration of your motion systems. Drive projects from concept, through rigorous testing and validation, into manufacturing and deployment.
- Mentorship & Team Growth: Mentor junior and mid-level engineers in the principles of advanced motion control. Act as the team's subject matter expert, fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, and deep technical understanding.
- Vendor & Partner Management: Lead technical collaboration with motion control vendors to develop and specify custom-designed products, ensuring optimal performance, cost, and development time for critical components.
To Be Successful, You Will Need
- A PhD or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field, with 10+ years of experience in life science instrumentation, semiconductor equipment, and/or automation/robotics.
- Expert-level, hands-on knowledge of control systems theory and application, including the tuning of PID/servo loops (current, velocity, position), phase/gain margin analysis, and system characterization using Bode plots.
- Demonstrated experience tuning multi-axis gantry systems and precision linear stages to achieve micro to nano-scale resolution, stability, and move-and-settle times.
- A proven track record of taking multiple complex products from concept through high-volume manufacturing.
- Deep experience with programming, configuring, and performance tuning of advanced motion controllers for synchronous, multi-axis trajectories.
- High proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) and applying advanced simulation tools (e.g., FEA for structural, thermal, and vibration analysis).
- Experience with analysis tools such as Python or MATLAB for data acquisition and control system analysis.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information and strategic recommendations to both engineering teams and senior leadership.
Nice to Have
- Direct experience managing or formally mentoring other engineers.
- Proficiency with SolidWorks PDM/EPDM and creating detailed mechanical drawings and GD&T.
- Deep knowledge of design for a variety of manufacturing techniques, including injection molding, machining, casting, and sheet metal.
- Knowledge of software programming (C++, Java) or electrical engineering design principles.
