DigitalOcean’s UI Platform team is a remote team within Platform Engineering that owns the core React Micro-Frontend architecture, Apollo GraphQL, and associated tooling for our UI and Full-Stack engineers distributed throughout the organization. We support our engineers by empowering them to be their most efficient in delivering performant and resilient products that delight our users and meet them wherever they are across the globe.
We are looking for a Sr. Software Engineer II, UI Platform who shares our passion for making the complex simple for our customers. This role reports to the Sr. Engineering Manager of the UI Platform team and will be directly responsible for the performance, reliability, scale, and security (PRSS) of GraphQL at DigitalOcean as their primary role. We’ll give you the freedom to do what you do best, so you should feel comfortable owning your work from start to finish, as well as bringing fresh ideas to the table that can make our products, development experience, and team better. You’ll have the opportunity to work closely with multiple areas of the company to make ideas a reality and ensure alignment with organizational priorities and strategy. Our current stack consists of React, TypeScript, and GraphQL, though the larger UI community continues to support our legacy monolith Ember application.
What You’ll Be Doing:
- Informing, leading, and executing on our efforts to fulfill our long-term UI Platform technical vision through the continuous improvement of our core architecture and associated developer productivity tooling
- Leading the planning and execution of the successor to our current GraphQL implementation, DOGraphQL 2.0, partnering with the Office of the CTO and API Engineering when needed
- As an expert in building and documenting GraphQL APIs, you will be responsible for providing governance, setting and evolving standards and best practices, and change management for GraphQL to our engineers throughout DigitalOcean
- Collaborating with the the UI Platform Technical Lead, Office of the CTO, Security, and other teams within DigitalOcean to surface and solve highly complex problems with broad impact, ensuring technical and strategic alignment
- Engaging with the larger engineering community at DigitalOcean to identify gaps and craft impactful improvements that meet the needs of the business
- Building telemetry that further enables our data-driven capabilities to visualize, orient, prioritize, and deliver on our priorities and unlock opportunities for product teams while proactively identifying and mitigating potential failure modes
- Nurturing a culture of, and writing, 1-Pagers, ADRs, and RFCs that drive awareness and incorporate the voice of our internal and external customers in our roadmaps and proposals
- Working with leadership to establish annual and 8Q roadmaps for our foundational initiatives and informing periodic adjustments to our long-term vision as necessary
- Mentoring and supporting our engineers across our organization to help them–and you–grow
What You’ll Add To DigitalOcean:
- Prior, recent experience working within a core/platform team responsible for driving and delivering internal products and direction leveraged by multiple teams
- Dedication to and cultural leadership by example in designing, developing, testing, and shipping well-engineered solutions at scale
- Expertise with GraphQL and Apollo (Server and Client) as a technical leader capable of forming and driving standards, planned maintenance and upgrades, and owning overall health of the service
- Expert knowledge of TypeScript; demonstrated experience in Go is a major plus
- Strong experience with React, Node.js, and their respective ecosystems
- Experience with CI/CD, GitHub Actions, synthetic and smoke testing, and alerting
- Experience with implementation and maintenance of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) and Identity and Access Management (IAM)
- Experience building and maintaining CLI-based tooling for engineers
- Clear communication through effective and crisp documentation, presentations, and asynchronous channels in a remote environment
- A natural curiosity in what lie
