Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Neurology, Neuromuscular - Full Time        

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) delivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN also examines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                  

• Consults with collaborating physician(s) on implementation, evaluation and revision of treatment plan.

• Conduct comprehensive neurological assessments, including patient history, physical examinations, and neurological evaluations.

• Direct patient care, acting as an independent provider caring for patients with ALS and MDA disorders and providing support to the neuromuscular physicians with patient care related activities

• Perform lumbar punctures including intrathecal administration of QALSODY (Toferson) following clinical protocols and safety standards.

• Participate and assist with the coordination of the MDA and ALS multidisciplinary clinics.  In collaboration with the Medical Director, select and train health care providers participating in both the MDA and ALS multidisciplinary clinics (PT, OT, SW, psychologist, respiratory therapist, nutritionist, speech pathologist and other nurses).  

• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and case conferences to discuss complex cases and develop comprehensive care plans.

• Assist neurologists with procedures such as EMGs, and nerve conduction studies.

• Assist in planning and executing center-wide initiatives, including ALS patient symposiums, support groups, educational programs, and community outreach events.

• Serve as a liaison between patients, clinical staff, and outside resources to ensure comprehensive care coordination.

• Participate in quality improvement projects, registry data collection, and research activities as applicable.

• Provide training and supervision to the nursing staff and multidisciplinary team to promote high standards of patient care and clinical practice.

• Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories.

• Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.

• Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.

• Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities

• Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability.

• Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

• Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.

• Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

• Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals.

• Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

• Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

Education:

Master’s degree in relevant field

Certification and Licensing:

Valid State of Florida APRN License

Certification as an Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner (AGNP) or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) through organizations such as the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academ
