Chaplain-Pastoral Care and Education-Mount Sinai Beth Israel/Rivington-Full Time, Days

Reporting to the Senior Director of Education for the Center for Spirituality and Health, and with a dotted line to the Vice Chair of Psychiatry for MSBI, the Chaplain is responsible for responding to the spiritual needs of patients and staff at the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center (MSBHC). The Chaplain provides spiritual and emotional support to patients within this setting and also supports staff as needed and appropriate.  The Chaplain functions as a team member of Mount Sinai Health System’s Center for Spirituality and Health and establishes collaborative relationships with the interdisciplinary care team and other professionals.

1.   Visit patients throughout MSBHC.
2.   Assess the spiritual needs of patients, offer appropriate interventions, and assess the outcomes of these interventions. 
3.   Participate in interdisciplinary meetings in assigned patient care areas and collaborate with the care team.
4.   Lead spirituality groups on hospital units.
5.   Fulfill all documentation requirements, including appropriate charting in the electronic health record.
6.   Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives.
7.   Participate in staff support initiatives, including Take10 visits, bereavement support, and other appropriate activities.
8.   Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide a safe environment and communicate effectively with all age groups of patients served by the Department of Spiritual Care and Education. 
9.   Collaborate with MSBHC staff and outside organizations to ensure an appropriate supply of religious/spiritual literature and items for patients.
10.   Participate in the overnight and weekend on-call rotation as needed. 
11.   Represent, as appropriate, the Department of Spiritual Care and Education at committee meetings. 
12.   Liaise with Roman Catholic priests, community clergy, and Eucharistic ministers to ensure patients’ religious needs are met.
13.   Precept CPE interns and residents, participate in orientation of new students and, as needed, teach didactics to CPE students.
14.   Participate in the organization and leadership of holiday services and in special activities connected to Nurses’ Week and other programs.
15.   Perform other related duties and activities as requested by the Senior Director of Education and/or the Vice Chair of Psychiatry.
16.   Adhere to all departmental and hospital safety standards.
17.   Complete all mandatory in-service trainings. 
18.   Adhere to all Mount Sinai Health System standards, policies, and procedures. 
19.   Adhere to the code of ethics of the Association of Professional Chaplains.
 

Master’s degree with a focus in theology or related fields.
At least four units of CPE.
Three years’ experience working in healthcare chaplaincy 
Certified – or certification eligible – by the Association of Professional Chaplains, Neshama: the Association of Jewish Chaplains, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or the Spiritual Care Association.
Basic Computer skills.

•   Ability to listen actively and convey calming, accepting, mindful presence and focus on the needs of patients, families and staff
•   Analytical ability to assess patients’ spiritual needs and sense of wellbeing, and to find appropriate and compassionate responses to patients’ issues and concerns
•   Empathy for the problems experienced by patients and families; commitment to help the distressed
•   Excellent written and oral communication skills
•   Willingness to engage in outcome-oriented chaplaincy
