Senior Autonomy Systems Engineer, Fault Detection & Response
MotionalAbout the role
Mission Summary:
A Senior Autonomy Systems Engineer in the Fault Detection and Response (FDR) Autonomy Systems team will lead analysis and development in delivering safe and reliable fault monitoring and response systems for the AV. The role will require working closely with teams across the company and quickly coming up to speed on software and hardware systems to understand fault impacts across the system. A successful engineer in this role is able to pragmatically utilize system analysis, simulation, various test modalities, and fleet performance analysis to effectively guide and lead designs for fault detection and response behavior of the complex safety critical system.
What you'll be doing:
- Work with Software Development teams to establish safe and reliable system in presence of faults
- Collaborate with autonomy teams and lead efforts to establish reliable monitoring across systems
- Establish active monitoring of the test and fleet data to characterize system performance
- Establish process improvements to formalize critical requirement checks as part of the build/deployment process
In addition, you will:
Lead Design and Implementation of Fail Safe/Degraded Modes for the AV
- Integrate with software, program, operations and product to spec out appropriate improvements and features for AV behavior in presence of faults
- Quickly iterate through solution deployment to gain experience to drive improvements
- Manage effective design and integration of features impacting multiple subsystems
- Communicate across leadership and engineering teams understanding of degraded/fail-safe conditions and expected behavior during these modes
- Pragmatically manage requirements derivation through implementation, validation and verification
- Support UX discussions to support integration of fault/degraded operations in development and production modes to ensure those interacting with AV are effectively informed
Design fault identification and deployment within software/hardware systems
- Guide analysis for fault development and validation based off system safety/failure analysis
- Ability to establish SW Integration and Simulation tests to support formalization of requirements (C++, python)
- Able to effectively guide documentation best practices for decision decisions/justification ait workedround fault designs
- Perform fleet data and simulation analysis using internal and public APIs to make effective/scalable analysis for signal behavior across multiple systems (SQL, Python)
Provide Critical Support for Fleet Issue Resolution
- Able to effectively decompose fleet issues to possible causes and drive prioritization of root cause analysis for issues related to the Fault Detection and Response systems
- Defining and/or developing automated analysis to support faster evaluation of RCA for issues experienced (python, sql, c++)
- Ability to lead identification of process/CI improvements to address root cause and establish preventative processes/CIs to avoid issues in future
What we're looking for:
- Highly skilled/experienced with all of the following: system analysis, safety concepts, software control system architecture and feedback loops
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; effective in communicating complex concepts and driving resolutions
- Pragmatic approaches to system analysis, design and problem solving
- Passion for developing complex safety critical systems
- Software integration test development
- Pragmatic end-to-end systems engineering experience and capability in analysis, requirements development, and V&V
- General experience/comfort with Linux (including terminal)
- Ability to read C++ control software
- C++ development experience for SW integration tests
- Python (or equivalent language) experience for analysis of data from API/SQL databases
- 5+ years of engineering experience
- BS in Aerospace, Computer Science , Electrical, Physics, Robotics, Software, or equivalent Engineering
Bonus Points (not required):
- Experience with reliability analysis for SW control systems
- Simulink/Stateflow model development experience
- SysML modeling exposure
- Safety Analysis experience on complex safety critical systems in a regulated environment (aerospace, autonomy, medical, rail, etc.)
- Development experience of control systems in safety critical environment
- MS in Aerospace, Computer Science, Electrical, Physics, Robotics, Software, or equivalent Engineering
