Principal Associate, Counsel - Financial Services Legal Team

Capital One’s Financial Services (“FS”) Division is a leader and pioneer in the auto-finance industry.  Capital One strives to bring tech-focused, innovative solutions to the auto industry from car buying to loan servicing and beyond with a mission-focused approach.  To support this expanding business, the FS Legal Team seeks to add a Principal Associate, Counsel to our fantastic team.  This is a true entry-level role that will provide an incoming attorney with exposure to all facets of the auto lending business from dealer relationships to loan onboarding to loan servicing and loss mitigation, as well as FS’s digital products, such as Auto Navigator. An attorney in this role must embrace a working environment in which they may be called upon to pivot from one project or assignment to the next.  Assignments may include statutory analysis and interpretation, synthesis of trending regulatory issues, customer complaint analysis, participation in contract review and negotiation,  communication and design review, among many other exciting opportunities.  Experience in a particular industry or type of practice is not required for this role, only a strong desire to continually learn something new and dive into in-house legal practice.  We are looking for a strong candidate with a growth mindset that will thrive in a highly collaborative environment with a supportive and engaged legal team. This is a rare opportunity for a junior lawyer to jumpstart an in-house legal career at the intersection of tech and consumer finance.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

  • Active member in good standing of at least one state bar

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-3 years of experience in a law firm environment or as in-house counsel 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to influence others

  • Ability to work effectively both in teams and independently, make effective and integrated decisions, and collaborate effectively with company associates at all levels

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
