Gilt Specialist

Objective:
Oversee gilt grow out operations to ensure accurate inventory management, genetic integrity, animal selection and quality, and timely availability for internal and external customers. Collaborate closely with Multiplication, Gilt Logistics, Data Bureau, and Health teams to manage gilt flow, transportation, testing, vaccination compliance, and shipment clearance, while optimizing site capacity, reducing rejects, and supporting shareholder and customer satisfaction.
Role and Responsibilities:
· Manage gilt flow, placement, and turn schedules across gilt grow out sites
· Support gilt selection, training, and readiness to ensure animals meet quality, health, and age specifications
· Track and reconcile gilt inventories, adjusting for movements, sales, culls, and transfers
· Ensure correct use of grow out facilities (capacity compliance, age targets, downtime between turns, wash and disinfection)
· Coordinate gilt availability with Gilt Logistics Specialist and Multiplication team
· Process gilt orders, including scheduling, health documentation, and shipment clearance
· Review testing results and vaccination records to approve gilts for shipment
· Monitor gilt quality, reject rates, and rejection reasons; implement corrective actions
· Maintain accurate records in Porcitec and related databases
· Communicate risks, shortages, or opportunities to the Multiplication Director
· Support external customer fulfillment and internal shareholder supply needs
· Assist with gilt handling activities as needed, including movements, tagging, vaccination, or other operational tasks depending on site needs
· Collaborate across Pipestone management teams to optimize gilt supply efficiency
· Support initiatives to reduce gilt rejection rates
· Assist with risk evaluation and resource optimization
· Participate in process improvement and data analysis projects as needed
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
· Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Agriculture, Biology, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience)
· 5-10 years of experience in swine production, gilt development, multiplication, or herd flow management. Experience with inventory tracking systems and animal health documentation preferred
Work Environment:
· Professional, fast paced and collaborative work environment.
Physical Requirements:
· Ability to work directly with animals
· Bend, squat, and lift as needed
· Travel approximately 50% of the time
· Drive long distances and work from multiple locations
· Ability to work at a computer for extended periods (up to 3 days per week)

Compensation, Pay & Benefits:
- Compensation rate of $50,000 -$65,0000, depending on experience
