Job Summary

The inpatient pharmacy technician supports pharmacists in providing pharmacy services. The technician is responsible for packaging, preparation, and distribution of medications, inventory control, customer service and maintaining pharmacy records.

Cleveland Clinic’s inpatient pharmacy areas support distributive and clinical pharmacy services provided by staff pharmacists, clinical pharmacy specialists and pharmacy technicians, supporting 60 nursing units, 80 operating rooms, 4 PACUs, and 10 Cath labs, accounting for over 1,440 inpatient beds. As an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician in this role, you will be responsible for controlled and non-controlled substance medication replenishments to designated operating rooms, inventorying and outdating of medications, and quarterly completion of nursing unit inspections.  

Caregivers in this role will work 2nd shift from 2:00pm to 10:30pm with no weekend requirements.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Prepare medications through selecting, labeling, repacking, non-sterile compounding and sterile compounding.  

  • Deliver medications to the appropriate storage locations in an accurate and timely manner. 

  • Maintain accurate and appropriate inventories of medications and supplies and complete inventory audits, such as cycle counts and nursing unit inspections.  

  • Maintain a safe and clean work area by complying with procedures, rules and regulations, and document regulatory requirements such as temperature logs, scheduled activities and training.  

  • Use information systems, technology and automation to complete assigned tasks.  

  • Assist with the training of pharmacy caregivers and students. 

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • High school diploma or GED

  • Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National HealthCareer Association (NHA)

  • Active registration through the Ohio Board of Pharmacy (OBOP) as either a Certified Pharmacy Technician, Registered Pharmacy Technician or Pharmacy Technician Trainee

  • Please note: Caregivers with active Pharmacy Technician Trainee or Registered Pharmacy Technician registrations are required to update their registration to a Certified Pharmacy Technician registration with the OBOP within 6 months.

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • Completion of a formal pharmacy technician training program

  • 6 months of hospital experience
