Salary Range: $73,164.00-$91,442.00       

OVERALL DESCRIPTION

Instructor - Regional Rail

Provide initial and follow-up instruction for new and existing employees in the Railroad Operations Division and qualification/familiarization training for personnel of other departments, outside contractors and other agencies/organizations.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructor - Regional Rail

  1. Conducts instructional programs and evaluations to qualifying students in safe operation, customer service, operating rules and regulations.
  2. Develops training programs and evaluation mechanisms.
  3. Monitors, evaluates, and reports on the on-going performance of qualified employees to assure compliance with operating standards, rules and regulations of the Authority.
  4. Provides orientation to outside contractors and other non-Authority personnel on general safety rules, and qualify other departments’ personnel on various topics when required.
  5. Coordinates reviews and evaluations of internal and external technical proposals for changes in; 1) the methods of operations, 2) equipment, and 3) other modifications; and provides impact analysis of the proposed changes on safety and personnel requirements
  6. Conducts re-certification classes and evaluations.
  7. Conducts safety programs and qualification classes for hourly and salaried personnel.
  8. Assists in troubleshooting equipment and schedule adherence during daily operations.
  9. Assists in the analysis of accident data, employee performance, and employee development.
  10. Assists in accident investigation, analysis, and methods to improve training, equipment or facilities.
  11. Assists in passenger surveys, implementing service changes, line conversions, and accident investigations.
  12. Works closely with other operating departments to implement contests and campaigns to promote safe operating practices.
  13. Assists Operations during service interruptions.
  14. Complies with all Authority and departmental safety and security policies and procedures, as well as all applicable job safety responsibilities. Reports any safety concerns, compromises, or hazards in the immediate working environment to supervision and takes initiative to alleviate potential and existing hazards affecting self and other employees; is responsible for the individual’s own safety and is encouraged to promote the safety of others.  
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Instructor - Regional Rail

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum two (2) - three (3) years' experience possessing a Conductor or Engineer certificate from any Railroad preferred.
  • External candidates must be able to obtain a SEPTA conductor or engineer certification upon hire.
  • Current qualification on the NORAC Operating Rules preferred.
  • Ability to achieve universal physical characteristics qualifications in the SEPTA operating area within six (6) months of accepting the position.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills required.
  • Candidates qualifying for an interview will be required to conduct an "oral presentation" as part of the interview process.
  • A review of internal hourly/union employee's work record will be performed as part of the screening process. Applicants must possess acceptable attendance, performance and safety record as measured through established criteria.
