About the role

Summary

The BCM Gnotobiotic Rodent Facility is operated by the BCM Center for Comparative Medicine. It was established in 2013 and occupies 4500 sq ft of retrofitted animal facility space in the Alkek Building for Biomedical Research. The facility currently operates 100 flexible film isolators plus Tecniplast IsoP positive-pressure individually ventilated caging systems for sterile rodent housing. Services offered include: production and maintenance of germ free rodents, creation of new germ free lines, study development, hands-on technical manipulations in support of research projects, and data collection.

Job Duties

  • Plans, coordinates, and oversees the daily operations of the gnotobiotic facility, assuring adherence to proper procedure, quality assurance programs, and standards.
  • Supervises technical and animal care staff, allocates work, provides training and guidance, resolves personnel problems, oversees human resources related activities, including hiring and performance evaluation.
  • Interacts and coordinates with veterinary staff to assure health and welfare of animals.
  • Maintains and provides reports on facility health, function, personnel issues, animal inventory, data collection and room / animal logs.
  • Ensures adequate inventory of feed, bedding, enrichment and supplies to support facility operations.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and interprets health monitoring results ,including bacterial and fungal cultures and qPCR results, and implements necessary course of action.
  • Oversees gnotobiotic housing system to ensure proper function.
  • Troubleshoots mechanical issues and makes decisions regarding animal housing and care when malfunctions occur.
  • Oversees PI gnotobiotic colonies, provides recommendations for breeding colony maintenance and oversees colony records and data collection.
  • Coordinates with research stakeholders to plan and execute complex research studies.
  • Distributes collected study data and samples to appropriate individuals.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree. Four years of relevant experience may substitute for degree requirement.
  • Four years of relevant experience. 
  • Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS). 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Gnotobiotic housing and microbiome research.
  • Experience performing rodent technical manipulations.
