About the role

The Senior Accountant responsibilities include reconciling balance sheet accounts, maintaining general ledger, performing month-end and year-end close, and ensuring effectiveness and efficiency in all of accounting tasks. This individual in this role combines excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with a thorough knowledge of accounting principles to analyze financial reports and forecasts. This position is expected to function with a minimum amount of oversight while performing complex accounting work that requires the application of accounting theories, concepts, principles, and standards to the financial activities. This position works closely with and under the direction and supervision of the Sr. Accounting Manager to carry out all necessary financial management and fiscal control policies and activities for the organization’s central administration.  Primary duties will involve working on all grant-related functions, included but not limited to budgeting, invoicing, forecasting and liaison with project managers and funders.

Compensation: $97,700-$118,900K annualized, depending on experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Performs timely, efficient and accurate month-end and year-end close, typically handling the difficult and/or complex closing activities, including the general ledger and all subsidiary ledgers, cost allocations, and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Performs complex accounting work that requires the application of accounting theories, concepts, principles and standards to the financial activities in accordance with internal policies and procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares accurate and timely financial statements and analyze financial statements for discrepancies and other issues that should be brought to the Sr. Accounting Manager’s attention.
  • Develops program budgets and assists in the development of agency overall budget.
  • Prepares journal entries for the grant revenue, accounts receivable, and operating expenses according to the established agreements and contracts.
  • Creates and submits monthly or quarterly invoices to funders and ensures supporting documents and procedures are in place to track and achieve compliance with grant requirements.
  • Responsible for collection of grant accounts receivables and for monitoring cash flow.
  • Responsible for managing the organization's fixed asset accounting, including capitalization, depreciation, asset tracking, and compliance with applicable accounting standards.
  • Supports the annual audit and audits by funding agencies and regulatory agencies; responsible for all audit work papers.
  • Maintains confidentiality in reviewing and evaluating confidential financial plans and decisions, salary information, and other confidential information. 
  • Participates in and supports any key business initiatives and ad-hoc projects as needed.
  • Suggests ways to improve efficiency of accounting procedures.
  • Ensures compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting from four-year college or university, or five (5) years of experience in a directly related field.
  • Minimum five (5) years of related experience in the financial accounting. Previous experience in a non-profit environment desirable
  • Experience with accounting systems preferred.

Qualifications:

  • Ability to work independently, under pressure and handle multiple projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
  • Strong oral, written and presentation communication skills.
  • In-depth understanding of GAAP principles, accounting and filing procedures/practices.
