Job Description

 

The New York Times Magazine is seeking an experienced project manager to ensure that our journalism projects are completed successfully and on deadline a keen ability to marshall key stakeholders around projects on long and short lead times. You will have familiarity with the magazine’s stories, columns and regular contributors.

Every week, the senior project manager will work with top editors, story editors, designers, photo editors, research editors, copy editors, production editors and digital designers and developers to plan, create and produce the magazine’s digital enterprise. You will be the primary point of contact for everyone involved with closing the 10-20 digital articles that the magazine produces each week.  You will know the editorial process forwards and backwards. You will check in with each story editor to understand what stories are in the pipeline, and they will work with the editorial director to program the lineup of stories that publish online each week, prioritizing coverage that is timely, well-balanced and exciting.

You will also help track certain special projects, which often have complicated digital builds and print presentations that require coordination between teams across disciplines.

This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance. 

Responsibilities:

  • Track all stories from the point of the pitch to the assignment, draft, revision and published article. Meet with story editors regularly to understand what stories will be ready for publication.

  • Build the editorial calendar alongside the top editors.

  • Serve as a communication hub between editorial, art, photo, digital, research, copy and production on the process of producing the magazine each week.

  • Track all special projects and special issues. Build workback schedules that allow each department to hit their deadlines in a timely manner. 

  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.

  • You will report to the Managing Editor of the Magazine.

Basic Qualifications: 

  • 3+ years of experience working in editorial operations or management at a major news organization.

  • 2+ years of experience building editorial calendars, creating project briefs, developing timelines, etc. 

  • Demonstrated project management skills.

  • Ability to meet deadlines in an unpredictable news environment.

  • Familiarity with the magazine’s stories, columns and contributors through weekly reading of our issues.
