General Description of Position
Under the general direction and supervision of the Associate Dean and Dean of Advanced Technologies and Skilled Trades, the Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing courses in the Professional Truck Driver Training program. Courses may take place in a classroom, laboratory, online, or hybrid (online & face-to-face) formats. This is a full-time regular position.
Essential Functions
The instructor is responsible for writing course objectives, implementing appropriate teaching strategies, advising students, monitoring and evaluating student progress, and keeping accurate and timely student records. Teaching assignments for this position include, but are not limited to, Commercial Carrier Driver Training, Vehicle Inspection Training, and CDL Testing.
  1. Provide instruction and develop courses in assigned subject areas.
  2. Practice and encourage safety.
  3. Provide instruction to a diverse student population according to the objectives of each course in the Professional Truck Driver Training program.
  4. This instructor will utilize a variety of instructional strategies in the classroom/laboratory that include, but are not limited to, lectures, small groups, indoor and outdoor demonstrations, and driving instruction on campus and on public roads and highways.
  5. Prepare and administer student evaluation instruments and maintain accurate student records on attendance, achievement, and progress.
  6. Remain current in events and developments related to the subject area. Increase and improve personal teaching and subject knowledge through supplemental sources such as in-service activities, conferences, workshops, technical updates, and personal self-study.
  7. Participate in division and college meetings and committees.
  8. Participate in program Workforce Leadership Team (WLT) meetings.
  9. Maintain the security of College vehicles, equipment, facilities, and materials.
  10. Serve as an Academic Advisor for students. Tasks included in this area are: advise students on their academic progress, courses needed for graduation, and division/college policies and procedures; and generally serve as the first line of communication between students and the college staff.
  11. Develop/Revise Course Curriculum and Educational Materials: Develop and/or revise course objectives, content, descriptions, and instructional strategies on approved college curriculum forms. In addition, the instructor will develop, revise, and maintain classroom/laboratory policies, grading structures, and strategies. This instructor will review, evaluate, and recommend textbooks for course use.
  12. Function as a Member of the Professional Truck Driver Training Program, Transportation Division, Instructional Division, and SCC teams.
  13. Interact with colleagues, students, staff, supervisors, and the public in a manner
    which will project a positive image of the program and the College, and which
    promotes/facilitates instructional services such as recruitment, placement, and
    Orientation as assigned. This includes support of SCC Policies, Goals, and
    Strategic Plans.
  14. Perform other functions related to teaching assignments.
  15. Administer the commercial driver’s license examination in these areas: backing test and road test.
  16. Individualized Development Plan (New Instructors): Each new instructor will develop an individualized development plan in cooperation with the Vice President of Instruction or his/her designee.
