How you’ll contribute: 
As a Indirect Tax Director you’ll be responsible for managing all aspects of indirect tax including accounting, reporting, compliance and audits. This position will also support other tax functional areas (e.g., federal and state income tax compliance and accounting, tax information reporting, premium tax).  This position reports to the Head of Tax.

 

In this role, you’ll get to:

  • Lead the company’s indirect tax function
    • Manage all aspects of indirect tax including accounting, reporting, compliance and audits.
    • Scope of responsibilities includes premium, retaliatory and municipal tax, sales and use tax, payroll and product withholding tax, and personal property tax.
    • Collaborate with key stakeholders with respect to cross functional tasks, such as forecasts and admin system conversions.
    • Maintain strong control environment, including SOX, MAR and operational controls.
    • Identification and implementation of process improvements, including automation and documentation of processes.
    • Coach and develop team members.
  • Support the company’s tax planning initiatives
    • Model tax impacts of legislative changes, changes to return positions, and tax planning strategies with respect to indirect taxes.
    • Research and document tax technical and tax risk aspects of tax planning strategies with respect to indirect taxes.
  • Lead the company’s indirect tax controversy activities
    • Serve as primary point of contact for federal and state tax authorities during indirect tax and product tax withholding examinations.
    • Preparation or review of responses to notice and examinations by relevant tax authorities to gather and analyze data and support filing positions.
    • Research and document tax technical return positions.
  • Support the company’s tax advocacy activities
    • Serve as liaison to ACLI working groups, as appropriate.
    • Monitor potential tax legislative changes and identify and communicate items of interest/impact to company.
  • Support other tax functional areas as needed, including but not limited to, the company’s federal and state income tax accounting/reporting and compliance activities.
    • Actively participate in the tax quarterly financial close and reporting process, including review and/or preparation of book-tax adjustments, current and deferred tax calculations, effective tax rate reconciliations, internal metrics, and tax footnotes.
    • Review of federal and state income tax returns and related workpapers (e.g., book-tax adjustments, consolidating schedules, etc.) 
       

We’re looking for people who have: 

  • Bachelors Degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • CPA or CPA eligible preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 – 10 years of indirect tax reporting and compliance experience or broad tax functional experience in the life insurance industry or in a tax practice of an accounting firm servicing life insurance companies.
  • Experience with US GAAP and Statutory tax accounting (ASC 740 and SSAP 101) principles is a plus. 
  • Proficient with MS Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and Project.
  • Strong data analysis and manipulation skills.
  • Experience with Alteryx and other BI tools a plus.
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong accounting, analytical, and tax technical research skills.
