About the role

   

The Das Laboratory in the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, seeks a Technician III to support and manage the lab. This position is for a chromatin biology and epigenetics laboratory utilizing cell biology and genetic techniques to understand how certain epigenetic marks are inherited through special challenges in oocytes and embryos to preserve genome integrity. Under the direction of the principal investigator, the individual will divide their efforts between independent projects, animal husbandry (mouse and fly work), basic experimentation, lab organization, lab management, and maintain mammalian cell lines when needed. The individual is also expected to be engaged and participate in scientific activities such as seminars and lab meetings, in addition to their experimental obligations.

The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintaining animal colonies (breeding and weaning).
  • Genotyping mice and mouse colony management.
  • Maintaining fly stocks and managing fly rooms.
  • Maintaining an inventory of lab supplies and ordering lab supplies as needed.
  • Collecting mouse tissues and samples as needed.
  • Performing techniques such as PCR, in vitro transcription, immunofluorescent staining and confocal microscopy.

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in biology or a related field and up to 2 years relevant experience working in a research laboratory or equivalent combination. 
  • Proficiency in basic lab techniques and principles of molecular biology required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work independently as well as with other lab members required.
  • Strong organizational skills with close attention to detail required.
  • Must be proficient in basic computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master's degree in biology or a related field and at least one year of directly related, full time lab experience. 
  • Experience with animal husbandry and maintaining mouse colonies and/or fly work preferred.
  • Prior education in the fields of reproduction or epigenetics preferred.
  • Experience working in a research laboratory setting.

Important Details about the Position

  • This is an onsite position located in Ithaca, NY.
  • This is a full-time one-year term position with potential for extension contingent upon funding and performance.
  • We are unable to provide Visa sponsorship, now or in the future, for this position.
  • Relocation assistance will not be provided for this position.

While the regular business hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, the specific schedule may change to meet the needs of the business, requiring employees to work early mornings, evenings, weekends and University holidays and scheduled breaks.
