Brown and Caldwell has an opportunity for a Civil/Mechanical Designer Intern to spend a summer working with our Design Services team to support our Southwest offices. We are seeking a motivated, achievement-oriented individual who wants to spend their summer gaining practical, hands-on experience outside of the classroom. Detailed Description:
How Will You Make an Impact?
Interns at Brown and Caldwell make a daily, material impact by completing support duties to advance their team’s projects and objectives. They receive professional training and the support of their team. Interns can expect to be onboarded, mentored, and developed by industry leaders to develop real-life skills and make an impact on their assigned projects. Projects this role may work on include:
- Water, Wastewater or Reuse conveyance pipelines
- Water, Wastewater or Reuse treatment plant upgrades
- Pump stations
As a Civil/Mechanical Designer intern, you can expect your experience to include the following:

- Work closely with project managers, design engineers, and other team members to execute work for drinking water, wastewater treatment, and conveyance infrastructure design projects.
- Assist with the preparation of design drawing deliverables.
- Assist with creating and updating standard details that will be used on multiple projects throughout the company.
- Communicate effectively and coordinate with project teams including other disciplines or other firms.
- Check model and drawing conformance with BC or client standards.
- Update existing models and drawings for changes recorded during construction to deliver as-built documents.
- Adhere to Brown and Caldwell’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control process.
This position is allowed to be fully remote, 5 days per week. In-office at our Phoenix, Irvine, San Diego, Las Angeles or Las Vegas offices is also allowed.
Desired Skills and Experience:
To qualify for an internship, you must be enrolled in a full-time program (minimum nine credit hours per semester) seeking a degree in Drafting and Design Engineering Technology. You also must be in good standing and carry an overall GPA of at least 3.0 in your core curriculum, as well as a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
What Must Our Candidate Have?
- Attending a college or university in pursuit of an associate degree in Drafting and Design Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Science degree preferred.
- Working knowledge of Revit and/or Civil 3D software to create models and develop engineering drawing package submittals.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Look Like?
- Good technical skills with the ability to articulate ideas with engineers and other designers
- Self-starter, results-oriented, and ability to work under tight deadlines
- Ability to work both independently and on large coordinated teams
- Proficiency in standard software including MS Office, Outlook, and Bluebeam
- Candidates in pursuit of a Bachelor of Science in Civil, Structural or Mechanical Engineering will also be considered.
Salary Range: The hourly pay range for this position is based on the employee’s primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.
