Purpose

The is a full-time position to serve as a key team member in the Ambulatory Surgery Center at UT Health Austin. The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for decontaminating, preparing and sterilizing supplies and instruments for the Operating Room (OR), UT Health Austin Clinics and for various other units within the system.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the maintenance of all supplies, equipment and instruments in the system. Supports GI procedures and provides care and maintenance of flexible endoscopes and related instrumentation and supplies.

  • Performs quality control and documentation related to the sterilization process. Validates and maintains: event-related protocols; disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records; inventory check sheet(s); and equipment monitoring. Meets regulatory requirements for sterilization, high-level disinfection, biological monitoring, and employee competencies. Accurately documents and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards. Maintains accurate sterilization records. Properly loads and unloads sterilization cart items. Verifies that sterilization parameters meet before distribution of load.

  • Participates in new employee orientation, meetings, and employee evaluation and competency programs. May assist in departmental in-services and training. Works collaboratively with surgeon offices, ASC staff and adjunct UT departments to facilitate operational workflows and ensure overall goals of the organization are met consistently.

  • Inspects, disassembles sorts, cleans, and processes reusable instrumentation and equipment. Selects and operates specialized cleaning equipment. Follows manufacturer recommendations for use of cleaning agents, selects and prepares packaging materials for the sterilization of reusable instrumentation. Follows device manufactures cleaning guidelines. Identifies, inspects, and assembles all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser and endoscopes instruments per specifications and manufacturer recommendations.

  • Collects, cleans, checks, distributes, and tracks patient care equipment. As designated, inventory assigned supply areas for replenishment and rotates stock appropriately. Reports all malfunctioning equipment to department supervisor. Takes prompt corrective actions when hazards are identified (reporting or removing, as appropriate).

  • Demonstrates effective written and oral communication skills and actively supports and contributes teamwork in the workplace.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Current certification as either CRCST, CASSPT or CSPDT required or willing to obtain within 6 months of hire. Valid BLS Certification upon employment.

Certification from a recognized industry training platform such as IAHCSMM or CBSPD. Two or more years’ experience as Sterile Processing Technician. Maintains current knowledge of sterile processing, decontamination and sterilization of medical equipment and instrumentation. Broad knowledge of surgical equipment, instrumentation and supplies.
