About the Team

Workday is a leading Enterprise Cloud Applications provider developing and deploying a wide range of business applications. The Workday Architecture Group performs research on Workday’s future architecture, including building out proof of concepts and early products. If you appreciate the elegance and complexity of a highly available, scalable, secure, open and modern distributed platform and can perform quick yet accurate implementations, then this role could be a good fit.

About the Role

As a member of this team you’ll work with innovative and experienced engineers to work on the projects that will help define the future architecture of the Workday platform. You will take on the challenge of proving out advanced designs and scaling it to meet growing business needs while minimizing operational cost.

• Participate in the design of Workday’s future architecture

• Write code, develop tools, and perform other software engineering tasks necessary to prove out the architecture, in an iterative, agile environment

• Be able to move fast, yet generate high quality output, knowing that iteration is an important aspect of our development process

• Document design and code for maintainability

• Contribute ideas for continually improving the team's productivity, job enjoyment, and code quality

• Collaborate with architects, principal engineers and technical product managers to analyze functional requirements, devise architecture designs that provide real scalability, low latency, and high availability

• Be responsible for system performance and stability by proactively identifying and diagnosing issues and rapidly deploying code to address issues

• Be an enthusiast of our technologies and products. Influence and collaborate across functional teams in coming together towards a common business goal and data architecture

About You

Basic Qualifications

• 8+ years of software engineering experience
• 5+ years of experience with operations, development, and testing of large scale distributed systems in production environments using Java or another JVM-based language such as Scala or Kotlin
• 2+ years of experience with performance optimization techniques and tools for analyzing and troubleshooting performance bottlenecks across the entire software stack.

Other Qualifications

• BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Math, or related field

• Strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills

• System Design: Experience designing and developing solutions for large-scale distributed systems in production environments. Expertise in crafting applications that achieve enterprise-grade performance, scalability, and resilience.

• Testing: Ability to write and maintain unit, integration, and system-level tests that integrate with a continuous delivery pipeline.

• Code Quality: Experience writing clean, robust, efficient, and maintainable code using an object-oriented framework and relevant tools.

• Database Experience: Experience with implementing and/or using databases.

• Distributed Systems Expertise: Experience designing, building, or working with distributed systems. Understanding of concepts like scalability, lock-free algorithms, high availability, and the CAP theorem is beneficial.

• Cloud Computing: Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud is a plus.
