The Neurophysiology Specialist I is a mid-level specialist position. The role performs procedures appropriate to their competence, according to the facility policy and procedures, including test setup, maintaining patient safety and other related duties. Strong, well-developed communication skills are essential for this position. This is a Registered technologist that is competent in more advanced clinical testing.
Is knowledgeable in correct Neurodiagnostic performance and recognition of clinically significant findings and follows facility policy and procedures regarding critical test results.
- Maintains the patients’ safety through communication to other patient care support staff during testing if needed.
- Continues to learn and apply advanced knowledge waveform recognition, relevant medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, infection control, current HIPPA practices, contraindications for activation procedures, instrumentation and preparation for use.
- Performs patient assessment as related to care such as electrode fixation product allergies, movement restrictions and cognitive function.
- Knows and recognizes drug and physiologic status effects on activity monitored.
- Communicates appropriately and effectively with the patient and healthcare staff to convey the purpose of the diagnostic testing and answers questions regarding the procedure.
- Understands why and how to maintain correct electrode connections.
- Identifies and performs advanced technical troubleshooting and artifact identification and elimination.
- Understands and follows concepts of digital equipment and electrical safety within the Neurophysiology unit.
- Has knowledge of alternate montages, protocols and alternate equipment settings and their effects should be applied.
- Contacts supervisory staff as appropriate for problems within the Neurophysiology unit and prepares patient rooms for Neurodiagnostic procedures.
- Provides continuing education for the neurophysiology department to benefit the technologists and encouraging personal and professional growth.
- Precept onboarding technologists to provide practical experience and clinical training.
- Demonstrates effective leadership and clinical competency.
- Prioritize neurodiagnostic orders to ensure critical cases are done in a timely manner.
