Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 33 local health districts.


The Family Support Worker serves as a Service Coordinator for the Infant & Toddler Connection (ITC) of Central Virginia, providing coordination of early intervention services for infants and toddlers with developmental delays or disabilities and their families. This position ensures that eligible children and their families receive timely, family-centered services that promote the child’s development within everyday routines and natural environments.


The Family Support Worker collaborates with families, providers, and community partners to develop, implement, and monitor the Individualized Family Service Plan (IFSP), ensuring continuity of care and access to resources in accordance with federal (IDEA Part C) and state regulations.


The position is based in Lynchburg but may be required to work temporarily on a short-term basis in other district offices (Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford and Campbell).

Minimum Qualifications

• Experience providing support resources and information to customers.
• Understanding of infant and child development and family services.
• Experience in individual counseling, relationship building, and group leadership.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Skill in interviewing clients to gather, interpret, and use data effectively.
• Proficiency in documentation, data entry, and record-keeping.
• Proficient in using computer systems and web-based case management documentation tools.
• Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
