Communications Manager (Sorensen Center)

The vision of the Sorensen Center for Moral and Ethical Leadership (SC) is to inspire and equip individuals to lead people as Jesus Christ does. The mission is the mechanism by which the SC strives to fulfill the vision; we develop leaders with character and capability who edify families, congregations, communities, organizations, and society.  The Communications Manager will oversee branding and marketing for the Center, recruit and develop student leaders in the Communications and Outreach space and serve as a liaison from the Sorensen Center to broader BYU and external community.

What you’ll do in this position

Student Development      

  • Train, teach, supervise, and direct the work of student employees who create, plan, and execute the following:

    • Communications

      • Brand maintenance, evolution, and adherence

      • Graphic design

      • Marketing

      • Social media design, strategies, and engagement

      • Website development, design, content, and maintenance

      • Technical writing and editing

      • Videography and photography

      • Audio production and podcasting

    • Outreach

      • Cross-promotion for Center-wide and area-specific efforts

      • Experience design and management for promotional efforts

      • Internal collaboration

      • Inventory management

      • Presentations

      • Cross-campus collaborations

      • Booth design, organization, and execution for local and off-campus experiences

  • Ensure that student employees can:

    • Develop as Christ-centered leaders

    • Represent the department and university professionally and courteously

    • Take advantage of opportunities to develop specialized and technical knowledge, skills, and experiences

    • Provide support to other campus employees, volunteers, and programs

    • Provide superior customer service to BYU employees, BYU Students, and campus patrons and visitors

  • Create meaningful connections for students from Sorensen Center Vision, Mission, and Strategic Objectives to department efforts and use of allocated resources

  • Provide oversight for student involvement in the budgeting and purchasing process

  • Scaffold a student experience that allows for spiritual, professional, and character development (e.g. strengthened testimony, oral and written communication; evaluation, assessment, and implementation skills; problem solving; experience design and management skills; increased awareness of strengths; goal setting and attainment)

Program Management

  • In conjunction with Center leadership:

    • Develop and implement a branding, marketing, and public relations strategies and tools, including the creation, implementation, and maintenance of guidelines to direct these efforts

  • Develop and maintain the following Communications functions:

    • Website presence and engagement

    • Social media presence and engagement

    • Public relations and communication strategy for key stakeholders

    • Collaborative relationships with key partners in advertising, marketing, and public relations

  • Communications training and protocols for Center leadership, employees, affiliated personnel, and student employees
  • Graphic design efforts for both print and digital media

  • Programs and processes for audio/visual production, including videography, photography, and podcasts

  • Engage and contribute to efforts to evaluate and assess Center communications efforts
