About the role

Job Title:  Executive Director of Safety, Security, Health, & Environment (SSHE), SSF

Functional Area: Site Services

Department: South San Francisco (SSF) SSHE

Reports To:    Vice President of Site Services Operations

Location: SSF

Purpose:

The Executive Director of SSHE will lead Genentech’s South San Francisco Safety, Security, Health, and Environment (SSHE) organization, encompassing Security & Resilience (S&R) and Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) functions. This critical organization safeguards Genentech’s right to operate by proactively reducing risk and protecting our people, campus, environment, and scientific pipeline — locally, regionally, and, in select cases, globally.

This role will define and execute a forward-looking, multi-year vision and strategy for the organization, ensuring it evolves to meet the dynamic needs of the business and evolving campus vision strategy. This includes building the right capabilities — people, partnerships, processes, and technologies — to deliver innovation, measurable impact, and operational efficiency.

As a key leader at one of the largest sites in the Roche network, the Executive Director’s decisions will directly influence Genentech’s and Roche Group’s ability to achieve vital global SHE objectives. Success in this highly visible role requires exceptional strategic leadership, operational and financial acumen, innovation fluency, regulatory expertise, and the ability to lead change and influence diverse stakeholders.

Due to the nature of the position, the Executive Director of SSHE can have a high degree of interface with the Genentech Executive Committee, Roche Executive Committee, Roche Board of Directors and Genentech Officer community.

Scope:

The Executive Director of SSHE reports to the Vice President, Genentech Site Services Operations and serves as a key member of the Site Services Leadership Group. In this capacity, the Executive Director contributes to the development and execution of Site Services-wide strategy, goals, and operational priorities.

This role holds enterprise accountability for ensuring compliance with all applicable Roche, local, state, and federal regulatory requirements across a broad scope of disciplines — including security, environmental protection, workplace safety, occupational health, health services, and ergonomics. While the primary focus is the South San Francisco campus, responsibilities extend to Genentech operations in Dixon, Portland, Washington, D.C., and other locations as needed. Additionally, the Executive Director leads and partners on regional (Bay Area and U.S.) initiatives supporting Roche’s broader safety and security objectives.

The Executive Director serves as a strategic partner and subject matter expert to Roche Group Safety, Health & Environment (SHE), building strong collaborative relationships across Roche and Genentech to develop solutions to shared challenges, benchmark best practices, and contribute to global initiatives. The role also requires cultivating effective relationships with regulatory agencies and authorities, ensuring constructive dialogue and compliance with all applicable standards that protect Genentech’s license to operate.

The Executive Director leads a multi-disciplinary team of approximately 80 regular employees, supplemented by a significant number of contingent workers and contract service partners. The team comprises technical specialists and client-facing SHE professionals. Direct reports include several Director-level leaders overseeing functions such as executive and workforce protection, crisis and risk management, intelligence and investigations, health services, and strategic business operations.

This role carries significant financial responsibility, managing an operating budget of approximately $60 million, including long-range financial forecasting, business case development, ROI analysis, and operational and financial performance dashboards.

This role is site-based. The Executive Director of SSHE is expected to be physically on site a majority of their working time (measured in days per week).  The days of the week and the number of days may vary based on business needs.
