About the role

The Insurance Business Analyst serves as the first line of support fielding incidents reported via the Service Portal. Working directly with users, the Business Analyst will complete initial triage, provide guidance, resolution and/or workarounds as needed. The Business Analyst serves as a liaison bridging the gap between IT and our business partners to assess processes, priorities, capturing requirements in JIRA for development and/or correction and providing status updates to the business. This role involves understanding business applications & processes, identifying high priority and/or critical issues, and escalating when appropriate. Business Analyst will participate in testing and ensuring the successful implementation of technology solutions that align with the company's business objectives.

What you'll be doing:

  • Review, analyze, accept, and decline risks to ensure profitability for Markel. 
  • Assigned larger and more meaningful brokers, and will work on more complex accounts.
  • Underwrite and select new business that will produce an underwriting profit. 
  • Manage the existing renewal book and implement corrective measures, as needed, to meet profitability expectations. 
  • Communicate with regional managers and national product line leaders on individual accounts, current and proposed producers, and make recommendations concerning operations, systems and procedures when appropriate. 
  • Participate in audits and/or underwriting meetings as required.
  • Build and maintain quality relationships with key producers while simultaneously monitoring the entire appointed producer base for profitability and production.
  • Review forms and pricing of competitors and be able to effectively market the Markel product within the competitive landscape
  • Provide training or technical assistance to department underwriting support staff and less experienced underwriters. 
  • Handle referrals within your authority from the team.

What we're looking for:

  • Act as a senior team member providing exceptional customer service to both internal and external
  • Respond to user issues, answering inquiries and resolving issues firsthand by providing workaround or training
  • Triage production defects, recreate steps, provide supporting documentation and assigning to appropriate Scrum Team
  • Detail acceptance criteria for application production defects – working with end users, product owners, PRS and development teams – ensuring that all aspects are considered
  • Partner with the Scrum Master and Product Owner to ensure that JIRA defects get resolved with adherence to high quality standards
  • Collaborate with other team members to continuously improve the support process and make it as efficient as possible
  • Produce high quality work including documentation, details on JIRA tickets, etc.
  • Report status and metrics to reporting Manager
  • Assist with development and test activities; supporting team members as needed in order to remediate issues in a timely fashion
  • Coaches others on business processes, conducts knowledge transfer sessions on as needed basis
  • Develop test scenarios and test cases for use in system and integration testing
  • Demonstrates ability to manage large scale initiatives

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years Insurance experience preferred
