The Teaching Assistant is essential in aiding the lead teacher to foster a nurturing and engaging learning atmosphere
for students. Their support in managing the classroom, preparing lessons, and overseeing students enhances the
quality of the educational journey. This role calls for patience, adaptability, and a deep commitment to nurturing
children's academic and social growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
● Classroom Support:
○ Assist the teacher in implementing lesson plans and instructional activities, providing support to
individual students or small groups as directed.
○ Help maintain order and discipline in the classroom by monitoring student behavior, redirecting
off-task behavior, and reinforcing positive behavior management strategies.
○ Prepare and organize instructional materials, including handouts, worksheets, and visual aids, to
support lesson delivery and student engagement.
○ Communicate regularly with the teacher to provide updates on student progress, behavior, and any
concerns or issues that arise.
● Student Interaction and Assistance:
○ Work closely with students to provide academic support, clarification of instructions, and
assistance with assignments or projects as needed.
○ Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued, respected,
and encouraged to participate.
○ Serve as a mentor and role model for students, promoting positive social skills, conflict resolution,
and teamwork.
● Administrative Tasks:
○ Assist with administrative tasks such as taking attendance, recording grades, and maintaining
student records in accordance with school policies and procedures.
○ Help with classroom organization and cleanliness, including arranging furniture, tidying up work
areas, and displaying student work to showcase achievements.
○ Collaborate with the lead teacher and other staff members to ensure effective communication and
coordination of classroom activities and events.
● Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned by supervisors.
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
● Excellent interpersonal communication skills with ability to listen actively.
● Organized with attention to detail.
● Commitment to professional development and proactive research.
● Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
● Strong technical skills (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Google Drive) with the ability to learn
new software.
● Proficient in reading, interpreting and applying ORR policies and procedures.
● Knowledgeable in teaching, classroom instruction, and educational clerical skills.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
● High School Diploma
● 1 Year employment experience in a school classroom setting preferred
● Experience in the Child welfare field working with children and/or adolescents in a social service setting is
preferred.
