SUMMARY

Performs supervisory work in planning and directing the work of Labor Crew Chief I and II, responsible for crews of skilled/semi-skilled workers primarily in large-scale field operations such as street maintenance, utility construction, etc. This class is usually responsible for more than 35 employees.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Schedules and assigns work orders for maintenance of asphalt streets curb & gutters, and sidewalks.
  • Evaluates and makes independent determination of requests for service submitted to the Street Maintenance Division related to construction and repair of transportation infrastructure.
  • Inspects construction sites to ensure the use of proper procedures, designs, materials, specifications, and safety requirements.
  • Reviews, investigates, assigns, and resolves service requests.
  • Hires, evaluates, develops, promotes and disciplines assigned personnel.
  • Reviews work orders, service requests, and timesheets for accuracy; prepares reports.
  • Supervises the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.
  • Ensure all equipment is turned in for Preventative Maintenance on time.
  • Requires considerable knowledge and experience with general roadway construction and the Microsoft Office Suite, with the ability to learn the CityWorks work management system.
  • Periodically works one-week periods of On-Call duty
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Reports to Operations Supervisor; Crew Chiefs report to this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES NECESSARY: 

  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of street maintenance functions/activities, its administration and operations.
  • Knowledge of basic principles and methods of supervision.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain work surveys, reports, and records.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with the public.
  • Building and Construction – Knowledge of materials and tools involved in the construction and repair of structures such as highway and roads. The knowledge of the equipment used in each type of street maintenance crew type.
  • Communication Skills – Conveying information effectively through speaking and writing and understanding information others give through speaking and writing.
  • Organization – The ability to organize information in a way that can be effectively accessed and remain confidential if necessary.
  • Problem Sensitivity – The ability to tell when something is wrong or likely to go wrong. Recognizing there is a problem that needs a solution.
  • Time Management – The ability to manage time effectively in order to meet deadlines for numerous tasks at once.

TOOLS, EQUIPMENT, AND MACHINES: City vehicles, Computer, Phones, Fax machine, and Computer programs (Munis, CityWorks, Microsoft Office, etc.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT: Office and maintenance yard environment; quiet but can get busy; can be noisy around operating equipment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent and seven years of related work experience
  • Three (3) years of ongoing supervisory experience
  • Three (3) years of experience in general construction, labor, and maintenance, or similar work
  • Must obtain a City Driving permit at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates Degree
  • Five (5) years of ongoing supervisory experience
  • Proficient use of the Microsoft Office
