Senior Engineering Manager, API Services
The API Services team is responsible for designing, building and maintaining the central hub of services that ensures resiliency, scalability and best practices for Fastly’s Control Plane APIs, as well as the compilation and validation of customer’s configuration. We are looking for a leader to join our team who is excited to work in a collaborative environment, is proactive, and is excited about automating. You will play a key role in efficiently running critical components of Fastly’s Control Plane and extending our tooling with the goal of automation and self-service for development teams.
What You’ll Do
- Manage a collaborative, distributed engineering team.
- Provide mentorship and career development opportunities for your team members.
- Balance the tradeoffs in technical approaches to prioritize both scalability and stability.
- Identify, assess, and mitigate technical risks in software design, system performance, and production stability. Lead proactive planning and incident post-mortems to prevent future issues.
- Drive a culture of operational rigor, ensuring the team delivers high-availability services with well-defined SLAs, clear runbooks, and robust incident response processes.
- Provide context to technical conversations that drive clear goals and prioritization.
- Build and maintain close partnerships with stakeholders that enable your team to deliver effectively.
- Clearly communicate upward and outward to set and adjust expectations with your partners.
What We're Looking For:
- 10+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or relevant technical discipline with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software.
- 3+ years experience leading teams that design, build, scale and maintain distributed systems.
- Track record leveraging metrics to set goals and measure success of teams and systems.
- Proven success managing complex technical projects with various interdependencies.
- Experience advocating simultaneously for business goals, customer value, and developer happiness.
- Effective communication skills for working across the organization, including the ability to build positive relationships with peers and leadership.
We’ll be super impressed if you have experience in any of these:
- Experience leading teams with embedded SREs focused on automating build pipelines and supporting high throughput systems in the cloud.
- Success evolving critical systems while effectively balancing reliability, resiliency and scalability needs.
- Experience leading and building cohesive and engaged teams that execute effectively within a distributed environment.
Work Hours:
This position will require you to be available during core business hours, and occasional nights and weekends as needed for on call support.
Work Location & Travel Requirements:
This position is open to the following preferred office locations:
- New York
- San Francisco
Fastly currently embraces a largely hybrid model for most roles which allows employees flexibility to split their time between the office and home.
This position may require travel as required by your role or requested by your manager.

Salary:
The estimated salary range for this position is $211,370 to $253,644.
Starting salary may vary based on permissible, non-discriminatory factors such as experience, skills, qualifications, and location. This role may be eligible to participate in Fastly’s equity and discretionary
