Job Summary

We seek a highly skilled and motivated Advanced Practice Provider to join our world-class team of colleagues in the Cardiothoracic Surgery Aorta Practice at Duke University Health System. The patient population includes patients with aortic disease requiring surgery and/or surveillance imaging of aortic disease. In this role, you will provide exceptional care to medically complex patients and work to optimize patient outcomes. The cardiothoracic APP will perform these services under the supervision of the faculty physician(s) and provide care in the hospital-based CT Surgery clinic. This is an exempt position, and primary hours will be Monday through Friday day shift.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Practice to the full extent of your medical education, training, and experience while complying with additional administrative requirements mandated by state law and/or regulatory bodies.
  • Proficient in interpreting and measuring aortic CTA, cardiac MRI, chest MRA, and echocardiogram imaging or a willingness to learn this skill.
  • Provide care to adult and adolescent patients (age 13+).
  • Manage risk factors in patients with aortic disease and discuss recommendations with patients and referring providers.
  • Autonomously and collaboratively complete history/ physical examinations and consultations.
  • Prescribe medications.
  • Order and schedule laboratory studies, diagnostic procedures and imaging studies; explain the necessity, preparation, nature, and anticipated effects of scheduled diagnostic and therapeutic procedures to the patient.
  • Evaluate pre and postoperative patients in the clinic setting as well as patients with aortic aneurysms that are under surveillance.
  • Follow patients with aortic disease with long-term imaging interpretation and follow-up plans.
  • Coordinate/communicate patient care with nursing and ancillary staff and other interprofessional team members.
  • Participate in patient/family education.
  • Communicate with referring/consulting providers as well as outside referring providers.
  • Assist with outreach to outside providers to advance the aorta program.
  • Obtain data for aortic research and work with the clinical research team to enroll appropriate patients into the aortic device and aortic surveillance research studies.
  • Complete data acquisition/analysis and database maintenance for patients.
  • Participate in medical chart maintenance.
  • Participate in all aspects of follow-up care for discharged post-op and post-aortic dissection patients through clinic encounters, video encounters, and phone calls.
  • Participate in clinical trial enrollment.
  • Work with outside programs, such as the Marfan Foundation, Loeys Dietz Founda
